Server Updates: We decided to dump MySQL
Posted by TheGhost Sat Apr 10, 2021 2:11 am

We dumped MySQL

We have gone back to MariaDB and I guess we owe Monty an apology as it is obvious that we made a horrible decision going to MySQL

As time goes on, MySQL develops more extensive features (not created by Monty) or changes to its internal architecture. They have more developers on staff than MariaDB, so they are making changes at a faster pace. However, it turns out that MySQL sucks and is slower than dog shit! I guess Oracle deserves it though. I can see some bullshit was pulled during the sale and somebody messed up when they lost the lead developer (Monty) for MySQL.

Who's Currently Behind The Databases?

In 2010, MySQL was acquired by the Oracle Corporation. At that time, one of the original lead developers, Michael “Monty” Widenius, felt that the Oracle Corporation had a conflict of interest between MySQL and their Oracle database.

In response to this, he decided to create a fork of the project and he named it MariaDB. Since then, there's been a lot of healthy competition between MySQL and MariaDB that has led to some really great innovation. Since Oracle is backing MySQL and has a pretty solid foundation, it continues to be the leader and not because it should be. However, MariaDB offers some compelling reasons why developers may want to switch databases.

MySQL was originally started by MySQL AB in 1994 by a Swedish company that was created by a nerd named David Axmark, Allan Larsson, and another developer named Michael “Monty” Widenius. The first version of MySQL was released in 1995. In 2008, Sun Microsystems purchased MySQL AB. In 2010, Sun Microsystems was acquired by Oracle.

MySQL is currently maintained by the Oracle Corporation.

MariaDB on the day Oracle announced they had purchased MySQL, Michael “Monty” Widenius shit a shiny nerd cape and took several MySQL developers, and started MariaDB, a fork of MySQL and from that point, they have become #1.

Hats off to Michael “Monty” Widenius he is truly the shit and we thank you for what you have done, You did us proud! MariaDB is lightning fast!

Sincerely,
Ernest Allen Buffington
